The left side of the frame is stamped with Colt’s 1871 & 72 patent detail indicating when the conversion may have been performed &. The top of the barrel is stamped with Colt’s New York USA address (illustrated). The barrel's bore is near mint clean and bright with well defined rifling. The pistol has a 5 ½” round steel barrel and measures 11” overall. 38 RF Calibre (similar examples of Colt conversions are illustrated & described in chapter XVII of Serven’s book Colt Firearms and a cot 1861 Navy conversion similar to ours is illustrated on page 190 of the same book). This is an original example of the Colt M1861 Navy revolver contemporarily factory converted to. It saw widespread use in the American Civil War and on the American western frontier. 36 calibre cap & ball revolver was a single-action percussion revolver produced by Colt's Manufacturing Company. After 4/64 operations at Petersburg and Richmond, construction of Fort Hell and Dutch Gap Canal. The 1st New York Volunteer Engineers served in South Carolina from 10/61 - 4/64 with duty at Forts Wagner, Beaureguard and Pulaski, operations against Morris Island, Fort Wagner and Fort Sumpter. To put icing on the cake, this gun is historically inscribed to a Lieutenant of the New York Volunteer Engineers. An 1851 Navy cut-for-stock is downright common compared to these. Based on all the books and catalogs I've seen over a 30 year period (that includes publications of sales and auctions dating back to the 1920's) I'd be surprised if they manufactured more than 10 - 20 of these guns.
This Colt 1861 Navy Revolver is one of only 3 or 4 I have ever seen offered for sale that are configured with a four-screw frame and a cut recoil shield to facilitate their use with a shoulder stock. This is one of the rarest of all Antique Colt Firearms.
